Since 2012, Manufacture New York, our sister organization, has have launched over 100 fashion & wearable technology startups and grown pre-existing manufacturing businesses, creating high quality middle class jobs in the underserved neighborhoods of Red Hook & Sunset Park, Brooklyn.
Together with local strategic partners like Southwest Brooklyn Industrial Development Corporation, Red Hook Initiative, the Fashion Institute of Technology and Made In NYC, we are transforming the fashion ecosystem and creating a new, vertically integrated business model that serves New York City’s needs of today and the future.
In April 2016, we were selected, in consortium with MIT and a nationwide network of academic, public and major industry partners, to commence a new, $317 million nationwide public-private partnership to accelerate innovation in high-tech, U.S.-based manufacturing involving fibers and textile. The Revolutionary Textile & Fibers Manufacturing Innovation Institute is the 9th advanced manufacturing institute of the Obama Administration and Manufacture New York CEO Bob Bland is the Deputy of Apprenticeships & Internships for Workforce Training.
Through our formal partnership with FIT, we will establish a regional training hub for New York, committed to year-round apprenticeship and internships. Enabled by the Advanced Wearable Technology Lab, these programs will effectively bridge the current supply chain gap between technology enablers and commercial products in smart fabrics and be instrumental in bringing technologies to market by fostering innovation in manufacturing and advanced engineering.
